Cornell's Listening Habits (according to Spotify)

Updated: May 6, 2019

Spotify, along with The Echo Nest, released a pretty cool survey earlier this week that outlined trends they saw in the top most “musical” colleges (as ranked by Spotify Student Account Usage). Cornell was ranked 13.

There were a few interesting points from the survey. First, Cornell had the most amount of students awake between 6 to 7 am, possibly because it has the most amount of students who exercise before class. Alas, this means that the typical sleeping time for a Cornellian is about 5 hours/night.

Also interestingly enough, Cornell had a pretty diverse range in its most favorite artists with the classical Calefax Reed Quintet, indie pop Lana Del Rey, rapper Kanye West, DJ Calvin Harris and pop music giants Coldplay. Accordingly, Cornellians enjoy music that is high in acoustic-ness and instrumental-ness and are not so hot on danceability, energy or tempo. Paradoxically, the most popular tracks are Clean Bandit’s “Rather Be”, Calvin Harris’ “Summer”, Ariana Grande’s “Problem”, Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” and Disclosure’s “Latch”.

While there are a lot of unexplained factors in the study (like the definition of acousticness, speechiness and more), it’s worth noting that Cornell students do like to listen to EDM/ dance more than other schools. Maybe this could finally convince the Concert Commission to bring more EDM artists.
